How to Choose a PPC Agency in Canada: A Buyer's Guide

Choosing the right PPC agency can be the difference between wasting thousands of dollars and building a reliable pipeline of new customers. With hundreds of agencies across Canada claiming to be Google Ads experts, how do you separate the ones who actually deliver results from the ones who just talk a good game? This guide walks you through exactly what to look for.

Look for Google Partner or Premier Partner Status

Google awards Partner status to agencies that meet specific performance requirements, manage a minimum amount of ad spend, and maintain certified staff. While Partner status alone does not guarantee great results, it does mean the agency has demonstrated a baseline level of competence and commitment to the platform. Ask to see their Partner badge and verify it on Google's official directory.

Ask About Their Reporting and Transparency

A good PPC agency should give you full access to your Google Ads account. You own the account, the data, and the campaigns. Run from any agency that insists on managing ads in their own account or refuses to share login credentials. You should also receive regular, detailed reports that go beyond vanity metrics like impressions and clicks. Look for agencies that report on cost per lead, cost per acquisition, conversion rates, and return on ad spend.

Understand Their Pricing Model

PPC agencies typically charge in one of three ways: a flat monthly fee, a percentage of your ad spend, or an hourly rate. Each model has trade-offs. Percentage-of-spend models can create a perverse incentive for the agency to increase your budget whether or not it is justified. Flat fees are predictable but may not scale well. Hourly rates give you transparency into exactly what work is being done. Whatever the model, make sure you understand exactly what is included and what costs extra.

Check for Industry Experience

PPC for a law firm looks very different from PPC for an e-commerce store. An agency that has managed campaigns in your specific industry will understand the competitive landscape, typical cost per click ranges, which keywords convert, and what compliance rules apply. Ask for case studies or examples of work they have done for businesses similar to yours.

Beware of Long-Term Contracts

Some agencies lock clients into 6 or 12-month contracts with hefty cancellation fees. While there is a reasonable argument for giving campaigns time to mature, you should not be trapped in a contract if the agency is underperforming. Look for agencies that offer month-to-month agreements or short initial trial periods. If an agency is confident in their work, they should not need a long contract to keep you.

Evaluate Their Communication

How quickly does the agency respond to your initial inquiry? Do they ask thoughtful questions about your business, or do they launch straight into a sales pitch? The quality of the sales process often reflects the quality of the ongoing relationship. Look for an agency that takes the time to understand your goals, your market, and your budget before recommending a strategy.
