How R&W Rope Grew ROAS 20% Year Over Year on a Mature Google Ads Account

The hardest Google Ads accounts to improve are not the broken ones. They are the mature ones. R&W Rope came to the table with an account that had been running for years, which means the obvious mistakes had long since been fixed and the easy gains were already banked. Growth on an account like that has to come from precision, not rescue work.
The challenge
Improve return on ad spend on an account where everything already more or less works. On mature accounts, the leaks are small and scattered rather than large and obvious, and the temptation is to simply spend more. The goal here was the opposite: grow revenue while spending less.
What we did
The first lever was subtraction. We went through placements and keyword targeting and tightened both, cutting the long tail of spend that was technically delivering clicks but not delivering buyers. On an account with years of history, this kind of audit almost always finds money quietly leaking in places nobody has looked at recently.
The second lever was a discovery and graduation loop. Dynamic search traffic is excellent at surfacing search terms you would never have thought to target, but it gives you limited control over bids and messaging. So we treated it as a scouting system: the dynamic keywords that consistently performed were promoted into their own dedicated campaigns, where they got their own budgets, their own bids, and ads written specifically for them. Proven demand, full control.
The results
Revenue grew while ad spend went down, and return on ad spend rose 20% year over year on an account that was already mature. Wasted spend was cut through tighter placements and keyword targeting, and the promoted winners carried the growth.
The takeaway
On a mature account, the path to growth is usually addition by subtraction: remove what quietly underperforms, then double down on what has already proven itself. If your account has been running for years and has plateaued, that is not a ceiling. It is a backlog. PPC Sorted can work through it. Get in touch.
