5 Google Ads Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

Google Ads can be one of the most powerful tools in a small business's marketing arsenal, but only when it is set up and managed correctly. Unfortunately, many businesses waste hundreds or even thousands of dollars on campaigns that are not optimized properly. Here are the five most common Google Ads mistakes we see, and exactly how to fix them.

1. Not Using Negative Keywords

This is probably the single most expensive mistake in PPC advertising. Without negative keywords, your ads show up for searches that have nothing to do with your business. For example, a personal injury lawyer bidding on "lawyer" might end up paying for clicks from people searching "how to become a lawyer" or "free lawyer advice." Those clicks cost real money and will never convert into clients.

The fix: Review your search terms report weekly and add irrelevant queries as negative keywords. Build a master negative keyword list before you even launch your first campaign. Common negatives to start with include "free," "how to," "salary," "jobs," "DIY," and "cheap."

2. Sending All Traffic to Your Homepage

Your homepage is designed to serve everyone. But when someone clicks on a Google Ad for "emergency plumber in Victoria," they do not want to land on a generic homepage and hunt for the information they need. They want to see a page that immediately confirms you offer emergency plumbing in Victoria, with a clear phone number or booking form.

The fix: Create dedicated landing pages for each service or offer you are advertising. Match the headline on your landing page to the search intent of your ad. Include a single, clear call to action. The more relevant the landing page is to the ad, the higher your Quality Score will be, which means lower costs and better ad positions.

3. Ignoring Conversion Tracking

Running Google Ads without conversion tracking is like driving with your eyes closed. You are spending money but have no idea which keywords, ads, or campaigns are actually generating leads or sales. Without this data, you cannot optimize anything. You are just guessing.

The fix: Set up conversion tracking for every meaningful action on your website. This includes form submissions, phone calls, email clicks, and purchases. Google Tag Manager makes this relatively straightforward. Once tracking is in place, you can see exactly which campaigns are profitable and which are burning money.

4. Using Only Broad Match Keywords

Broad match keywords tell Google to show your ads for any search that is loosely related to your keyword. While this can help with discovery, it often results in your ads appearing for completely irrelevant searches. A dentist bidding on broad match "teeth" might show up for "baby teething toys" or "tooth fairy costume."

The fix: Use a mix of phrase match and exact match keywords, especially when you are starting out with a limited budget. These match types give you much more control over which searches trigger your ads. As you gather data, you can selectively add broad match keywords with strong negative keyword lists to expand reach safely.

5. Setting and Forgetting Campaigns

Google Ads is not a set-and-forget platform. The competitive landscape changes constantly. New competitors enter the market, search trends shift, and Google regularly updates its algorithms and features. A campaign that performed well last month might be underperforming today if nobody is monitoring it.

The fix: Schedule regular check-ins on your campaigns, at minimum weekly. Review your search terms, adjust bids, test new ad copy, and monitor your quality scores. If you do not have the time or expertise to manage campaigns actively, consider working with a PPC agency like PPC Sorted that can handle the ongoing optimization for you.
